We don’t want to give the impression that Wanstead Climate Action stopped doing anything some time in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025(?) just because we haven’t updated the website. Please don’t assume we’re inactive or all on holiday, and do get in touch.
It’s just that we’ve been too busy to update the website. You’ll see we’re still very active if you read Wanstead Village Directory or Wanstead Fringe. There are so many aspects to local and global climate and nature issues that we can’t (yet) address but have to try! We’re hoping that in future we will have a more regular schedule of a monthly newsletter and monthly website update. If you’re able to help with social media or comms or running stalls or anything, please talk to us – the main point is on reporting our plans is you will need to be involved to know what they are!
Anyway, here’s 4 months of stale events from the home page, although it’s a very incomplete summary of what we’re doing or want to do. Please, if you have any time or energy to spare and just lack the inspiration, come and talk to us!
- Sat 18 May 2024. Greenpeace’s Project Climate Vote goes door-knocking nearby.
- Tues 21 May Redbridge Climate Forum will be focussing on sustainable travel. The forum is where residents can collaborate and share ideas, opportunities and inspiration for community efforts to tackle the climate crisis, as well as to review and update Redbridge’s Climate Action Plan.
- Tue 4 June, WCA meeting, The Bull, 7.30. (These are usually first Tuesdays or Mondays, all welcome.)
- On 26 Feb 2024, as part of our United for Warm Homes work, two members of WCA attended Parliament for the launch of Left out in the cold, highlighting the link between the poor standard of energy efficiency in our homes and poor health.
- 8-16 June. Great Big Green Week.
- It’s wasn’t an event, but we’ve delivered thousands of posters to Wanstead properties with gardens this May/June explaining how gardeners can support biodiversity. (Thanks to GoodGym and Aldersbrook horticulturalists and Wanstead Community Gardeners for helping distribution etc.)
- Sat 22 June. A WCA group will be joining Restore Nature Now, marching from Park Lane to Parliament for resources and policies to protect biodiversity. 22-23 June
iswas also WREN’s wildlife weekend. Turned out to be about 15 of us among at least 60,000; only disappointment was lack of media coverage about biodiversity crisis and plans to address it. - September 2024 as part of Wanstead Fringe, we are planning a public meeting on home energy efficiency. We’ll also have a spot at Wanstead Festival on 15 September.
Details tbc. This happened amid the September rain, was reasonably well-attended and very informative. Links to come if we have time to write up the report. - September also saw out third ‘Climate Picnic’ with relaxed family-friendly sessions on air pollution, gardening and home energy efficiency went well although there was room for more people. We were out on a limb on Christchurch Green and the rest of the Festival was understandably a distraction.
- 2 October saw East London Humanists put on an expert panel on water quality and ownership in Wanstead Library. A recording may be online soon.
- Early October (12th) is The Climate Coalition’s ‘Common Ground’ opportunity to talk to MPs about the climate crisis. (Yes, it’s also Wanstead Beerfest, but meeting your MP doesn’t have to be on the day itself.) Anyone able to take on Jas Athwal or IDS, we can compare notes and support.
WCA’s 2023 Highlights
We’ve a page worth of these somewhere: fun demonstrations, community events, knit-ins (or appliqué parties), but are documented elsewhere.

Redbridge Mums For Lungs founder and WCA member Lydia was recognised at the 2023’s Mayor’s Community Awards for helping secure £320k for clean air projects.
